A sunny, but breezy, day at the Northleach Arena saw
home captain Tony Gardner win the toss again and elect
to bat first on a dry and bouncy wicket. After a slow
start the opening pair of Harris (35) and Gardner
(36) steadied into a rhythm of scoring against a lively
opening attack from Finney and Hughes, and reached their
highest partnership of the season thus far (77) before
both fell in quick succession. Veteran batsman Adam
Tarrant (24 ret) showed glimpses of his prowess before
he became embroiled in the crazy run out of youngster
Tom Hemming, and soon departed "retired hurt". It was
left to Crompton (32) to inject some aggression back
into the scoring rate, although Andrew Wellmad opted to
bat out the remaining overs for no score, and the
home innings closed on 199 for 8,
The visitors' reply started poorly, with Wellmad making
amends for his batting by taking 3 wickets in a fiery
opening spell (3 for 7) and Darren Hally claiming just 1
victim with his controlled and accurate deliveries. The
attacking field set by the home captain encouraged the
batsmen to play their shots, and young Pat Humphrys
(53) took full advantage as he reached his half-century
before an outstanding diving catch in the deep by sub
fielder Dickie Hemming saw his demise. Only one other
batter reached double figures as the Rams wrapped up the
victory, with Gardner, Crompton and young Dean Oseman
all claiming 2 wickets.
The first dropped point of the season will increase the
pressure on captain Tony Gardner as The Rams prepare
to play at Blockley in 2 weeks time. |
